”Life is fleeting and I can't be thinking of rubbercoats all the time”

Alexander Stutterheim brought the raincoat into the global fashion wardrobe. After the launch of a premium knitwear concept, his next project is all about luxurious private designs.

Some eight years ago, Alexander Stutterheim founded his eponymous label. The first raincoat was based on his grandfather’s fisherman coat, which he found in a barn and updated for the city.

– I recently started a second brand, named after my grandfather: John Sterner, he says, continuing: We are a high-quality knitwear brand where we work in a sustainable way with eco wool, and, for instance, have one series with wool from the Swedish island of Öland. That is where we have our roots, and our sheep.

This week saw John Sterner’s Paris Fashion Week runway debut.

– The Creative Director of Aalto, Tuomas Merikoski, ran into John Sterner at a shop in Tokyo and liked both the brand’s ethics and collection, so he contacted me to make a capsule collection which was presented in Paris yesterday.

The other week saw the launch of your new line Private Designs. How’d you describe that?

– I am constantly on the run with different ideas and want to invent and create new things, brands and, I guess, ways of living. Life is fleeting and I can't be thinking of rubbercoats all the time. So, the [Stutterheim] board asked me to start a series where I design whatever items I like and have full creative control. The Private Designs is only available to purchase online at and each item is numbered. We will launch a trenchcoat next week, a pair of handmade wellies in raw rubber later this spring and a lightweight raincoat that I’m really looking forward to present.

And anything else coming?

– For Stutterheim, I'm focused on the mentioned product development for the items for The Private Designs, but we also have some great products and collaborations coming up during spring. We recently launched new versions of our popular Rainwalker, a Chelsea boot with contrasting color sole. For John Sterner, we will launch socks and a new striped version of our Öland series in eco merino wool and I will also launch handmade duvets and pillows with 100 % organic wool from Öland, instead of down, which is inferior to wool for many reasons.
