How to bring more democracy to the art world? Through an Instagram voting, of course!
”By democratizing the curation of art, we break down barriers and make the art world more inclusive”, says Christian Barrett, founder of Democratic Gallery, also introducing the world’s first ”Gallery Battle”.
Today, Swedish start-up gallery, Democratic Gallery, will take on a new radical approach to make art more accessible to people. One of Sweden’s leading influencers, artist and actor Felix Sandman, organises the world’s first #GALLERYBATTLE. He introduces two different artists on his Instagram account, and Sandman’s followers then get to vote and decide which photographer will be represented by the gallery.
— By democratizing the curation of art, we break down barriers and make the art world more inclusive. Basically, we’re all artists. It’s one of the things that define us as human beings. Art is far too universal to be reserved for an elite,” says Christian Barrett, founder of Democratic Gallery.
The gallery’s business concept is based on finding exciting photographic art on Instagram. By allowing ordinary people to vote for different works, they democratize the art world, while helping undiscovered and non-established artists to reach out with their works.
— The model where a gallery owner acts as a filter between artist and audience, no longer works. We’re the first gallery in the world to let the people choose the art of the gallery, says Barrett.
Felix Sandman presents one work each by artists Danielle Mari Terablanche and George Koutsouvelis on Instagram Stories today. The work that gets the most votes in 24 hours will go to production and then sold in limited edition through the gallery. The battles will be held once a month.
— I broke through on social media myself, so I know the power it has, and that’s why it feels good to be able to join in and help another creative soul reach out with his artistry, says Felix Sandman.Danielle Mari TerablancheGeorge KoutsouvelisFelix SandmanChristian BarrettDemocratic Gallery#GALLERYBATTLE
