This year’s Helsinki Design Week attracted a record-breaking number of over 170,000 visitors, further consolidate its position as the largest design festival in the Nordics.
– The festival was a joyride of around 230 design events including seminars, exhibitions, and workshops that discussed the year’s theme Trust, says Executive Producer Anni Korkman. It was examined through a variety of angles, for example in what ways can a designer create the feeling of trust between a product or a service and its end user? In collaboration with food delivery company Wolt and Aalto University, we piloted the Design Delivered project that delivered fresh design to Helsinki homes.
Which designers and creators from this year’s program would you like to highlight?
– The most interesting ones could be:

- Milena Huhta (artist)
- Juslin Maunula (womenswear)
- Hanna Saren for eN Hats (unisex hats)
– And last, but not least, I have to name [product and furniture designer] Aino Michelsen. She designed a great collection for Interface [pictured] and gained a lot of attention during the festival.

New active pack designed for the city runner
Just a few weeks after the announcement of their collab with artist Daniel Frost, Norse Projects now launch their Active Pack. Designed with the city runner in mind, the technical athleisure pack is constructed from a lightweight, yet durable fabric finished with a breathable mesh lining. The water and wind repellent pieces utilise advanced materials, offering 4-way stretch, which maintains optimal comfort, and quick-dry properties. With their monochromatic hues, the form-fitting pieces are perfect for layering on and off the circuit.

Outdoor enthusiasts launching the ultimate over-shirt
Conqueror Roald Amundsen was the leader of the expedition which was the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. His relative Jørgen Amundsen carries the legacy and founded Amundsen Sports to enhance and simplify the everyday life for outdoor enthusiasts. The vision is to develop smart products inspired by the past and built for the future with advanced technical features and state-of-the-art materials. The major launch for this fall follows the same path, as the Wrangler over-shirt comes in water-resistant stretch cotton corduroy lined with wool fleece. With its front buttons and hand-warmer pockets, it is designed to be worn over a sweater or a shirt, making it a perfect companion for winter and fall.
Fashion profile putting his own mark on a superior line of merino wool
Norwegian fashion editor and stylist Storm Pedersen joins forces with high-end clothing manufacturer We Norwegians in a new base layer and underwear collab.
– I’ve been working more than 15 years in the fashion industry under an increasing amount of pressure, with fast shifting trends. After the realisation that this industry is one of the worst polluting industries in the world, beat only by the oil industry, I wanted to contribute to change the way we think about clothing and fashion. I was missing the simple, clean, and yet high-quality wardrobe staples in the underwear and base layer category. This is something that We Norwegians are incredibly good at, he says.
The WE+STORM capsule consists of 100 percent merino underwear, both briefs and boxershorts, long johns, t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, henley and pants – completely itch-free.
– For us, the foundation for this collaboration was based on our core values. We work almost exclusively with merino, and with Storm being from the northern parts of Norway he has a close relationship to wool in general due to the extremely rough climate in that part of the country. We have designed an exclusive line that is tailored to fit under both dress pants and jeans. A lot of the merino garments we see in the market today are what we call “fast garments” with a very sporty feel. We wanted to make the complete opposite – classic and timeless underwear that doesn’t necessarily look like you’re hitting the slopes. The nicer merino pieces that were suitable to wear under a suit or when you are dressed up for a party, were missing. There are countless options in cotton, but they will not keep you warm, says designer and founder of We Norwegians, Tove Grane.

“The Big Blue” will be the tallest building in the Nordics
Norwegian entrepreneur and former fisherman Kjell Inge Røkke made his estimated €2.3 billion fortune as the majority stakeholder in shipping and offshore drilling conglomerate Aker. Last year, Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper reported that he decided to give “the lion’s share” of the affluence towards building a 596-foot marine research vessel, the Research Expedition Vessel (REV). It’s also designed to scoop up a major oceanic threat—plastic pollution.
Yesterday, in the presence of Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, the plans for their new office, called World Ocean Headquarters, was unveiled at Oslo’s former airport, Fornebu. Described as an unprecedented global ocean solution center, the Swedish architect firm Wingårdhs won the Nordic architect competition with their landmark building “The Big Blue”, a design created to remind us of the ocean’s invaluable significance for life on earth.
It is designed as a “campus” – an open space with several structures and one landmark building. The ambition is to bring together world-class knowledge-based institutions related to blue economy, such as sustainable fisheries and ocean management, shipping, marine technology and aquaculture. Offices, conference facilities, apartments and hotel will be included in this thriving knowledge center. It will also work as a hub for the UN initiative Our Ocean, Our Future: Call for Action. While the project, worth €317 million, is fully financed, it’s yet to be approved by local authorities. If so, the 200 meter high 60-floor-building, will be the tallest in the Nordics.
– Norway is a world-leading marine and maritime nation and has the opportunities and prerequisites for taking on a global leadership role for the ocean. Our goal is to facilitate the gathering of world-class knowledge-, innovation- and research communities at World Ocean Headquarters outside Oslo, says Nina Jensen, CEO of REV Ocean.
